City Directories

Links to city directories follow description below.  Many are Polk City Directories, published by R. L. Polk, Co.  City directories were designed to provide information about communities.   When using the Polk directories, look for the following sections, particularly sections I and III.

  1. Buyer’s Guide – Yellow paper.  After the ads, look for businesses listed alphabetically by heading (e.g. Books, Fish & Sea Food Dealers, Taverns, etc.).  Listings include business name/address.
  2. Alphabetical List of Names and Businesses – White paper
  3. Directory of householders by numbered streets followed by named streets – Green paper.  Look for streets/intersecting streets with occupants listed.
  4. Numerical telephone directory – Blue paper
