Pre-Searching
Pre-searching is doing superficial research, which gives you:
- An idea of what information sources are out there on your topic
- A preview of what has been talked about within those sources
- An indication of whether your topic is too broad, to narrow, or just right
- Are you still interested in the topic after conducting superficial research?
Pre-search can include looking at:
- Websites on your topic, knowing you probably won't cite them
- Refence book articles on your topic
- Scholarly articles and books, but only titles, summaries, tables of content, and indexes at first

Many of the more in-depth entries (primarily artists, schools, and important works) include bibliographies to help further your research & understanding.
