Pre-Searching

Pre-searching is doing superficial research, which gives you:

  1. An idea of what information sources are out there on your topic
  2. A preview of what has been talked about within those sources
  3. An indication of whether your topic is too broad, to narrow, or just right
  4. Are you still interested in the topic after conducting superficial research?

Pre-search can include looking at:

  • Websites on your topic, knowing you probably won't cite them
  • Refence book articles on your topic
  • Scholarly articles and books, but only titles, summaries, tables of content, and indexes at first
