What can I find using the Library Catalog?

Over 800,000 books in the Bertrand Library collection, both print and online. Government publications, maps and atlases, CDs, DVDs and videos, Archival and Special Collections materials. You will find links to web resources and electronic collections. Journal articles from a number of databases: ArticleFirst, ERIC, JSTOR, Medline and more are also included.

How can I search the Library Catalog?

WorldCat Local provides a simple search box, you can enter your search terms as you would for a Google search. You don't need to type the word "and" in between terms. You can put phrases "in quotes," and you can truncate a search term with a ?

How can I refine my search?

After you have executed a search, you will be able to "Refine your Search" using the menu features on the left side of the screen. For example you can limit your search by Format to include only books, or only journal articles,etc. You can also limit by Author, Year, Language and Topic.

How do I find the location of a book?

When you search for and find a book in the Library Catalog, you can click on the link "View all editions and formats" to get more information. As you scroll down the screen, you will see a box titled "Find a copy in the Library." This includes the call number, status (available or checked out, etc.) and the location within the Bertrand Library. Circulating books are in the "Stacks" arranged by Library of Congress call numbers. To track down these call numbers, use the "Bucknell University Bertrand Library" menu at the very top left of the web page, and consult the Floor Guide.

A paper floor guide to LC call numbers is also available at the reference desk as a bookmark, on Library floor plans, and on the maps found on each floor of the Library.

What is the MyWorldCat Account?

MyWorldCat allows you to set up a personal account and profile, with contact information, saved searches, lists of catalog items that you create and edit, and several other features similar to some social software programs. You can keep it all private, or you can make parts of your account public, and searchable by other WorldCat users.

How do I sign up for a My WorldCat account?

In the very top right corner of the screen you will see a link for "WorldCat (sign in)". When you click here, you will see a login box, and the option to "create a free account". When you follow that link, you can create a username and password, and fill in the boxes for information required by WorldCat. NOTE: You may find that you cannot use your Bucknell username and / or password, due to some restrictions in this software. It is OK to make up another username and password, as long as you can remember them!
