Finding Books on Environmental History

You can probably find a lot of history and environmental history of states in books. On any library web page, WorldCat will allow you to search for books both in the Bertrand Library as well as books that can be ordered through Interlibrary Loan (just remember these take an average of a week to arrive).

Non-fiction books are (almost?) always arranged by topic, and the topics assigned to each book can be found in WorldCat. This means that you can also search by those subjects if you go the Advanced Search page in WorldCat and use the drop-down menu to search for your keywords in the subject fields. Some relevant subject headings are:

  • Natural history [state] (replace the state name with your state, without the brackets)
  • Land use [state]
  • Indians of North America [state]
  • Industries [Ohio Columbus History]
  • Urbanization Environmental aspects [Ohio Columbus]
  • Cities and towns [Ohio Columbus] Growth History
  • City planning Environmental aspects [Ohio Cleveland]
  • Water-supply [Ohio Columbus] History
  • Water resources development [Ohio Columbus] History

  • Environmental protection [Ohio] History

  • Pollution [Ohio] Economic conditions
